This resulted in the footage of the total solar eclipse in this video being provided by an RAF Hercules aircraft above the clouds. We see film taken of British expeditions preparing for the 1927 total solar eclipse (silent), as well as excerpts from newsreel footage of the July 31, 1932 total eclipse (sound) visible from North America.  Footage of the 1947 total solar eclipse taken in Brazil is incorrectly dated 1937. Other eclipses shown are 1954, 1961, 1963, 1968 embellished with personal recollections and anecdotes by Patrick Moore. Although it contained some errors (Brazilian 1947 eclipse incorrectly dated; the discussion of an eclipse comet in 1947 - should be 1948; & others) the video provided an interesting record of how the passage of the lunar umbra was observed in Cornwall.   (Michael Gill)

A little later, some High Altitude Observatory's coronagraph time-lapse movies of prominences is shown.  The movie seems quite campy now, with primitive animation and with an actor playing "Dr. Research" and the actor Eddy Albert conversing with cartoon Mr. Sun and cartoon Father Time.  But there is a lot of good material here, and there is very little I would change even after 45+ years.   Glimpses of some of the scientists of the time--Walter Roberts, Jack Evans, Donald Menzel, and others--appeared.  The quality of the transfer is pretty good. Only occasionally did I notice some film grain or scratches in the corner of the color movie.  The movie was fun to watch. Also on the DVD is "The Strange Case of the Cosmic Rays," another Capra movie in the series. (Jay Pasachoff)
