We see wild animals, meet native people and take a side trip to the Victoria Falls. Meiser and Demy speak of their passion as eclipse chasers.  (JML with thanks to Babak A.Tafreshi)
Un moment d'obscurité 2001 France French 26 min Angola was the first country to witness the first total solar eclipse of the 21st century.  The scientists from the Astrophysical Institute of the CNRS chose to observe the eclipse there because of more favorable weather statistics, longer duration of totality and more optimal viewing angle. Eclipses represent a unique opportunity to obtain information about the Sun, since it allows them to observe the solar corona which is otherwise invisible from Earth.  But the decision to come to Angola was a difficult one.  Though it is the ideal location from a scientific point of view, the guerilla warfare that has raged there these past twenty five years has devastated the country and made more than half-million victims.
Les Chasseurs d'Ombre Shadow Chasers 2000 Canada French / English 58 min Solar eclipses, among nature's more spectacular phenomena, have always fascinated us. For some people they become a veritable obsession. What makes these eclipse chasers run? The film follows four of them as they travel to witness the last total eclipse of the millennium as it sweeps eastward across Europe to India. At various points along the way enthusiasts Alain Cirou in France, Paul Houde in Austria, Olivier Staiger in Germany and Debasis Sarkar in India offer their impressions of the historic event. From the legends of ancient religions and civilizations to the present day, there is one constant :  the search for spirituality in its most basic form. The film is a kind of poetic meditation, an impressionistic illumination of what links humanity together in the face of the absolute, when the soul is stamped by more than just the shadow of the Moon.
Hooked On The Shadow 2000 Canada English 24 min A startling new documentary that examines the phenomenon of eclipse chasing - one of the most obsessive sub-cultures of our time. Discover why thousands are driven to some of the most remote regions of the Earth every couple of years.  From the deserts of ancient Babylonia to the islands of the Caribbean, the film takes you inside the shadow of the Moon to discover an event that has pushed science to the edge of its understanding and fed our dreams of the divine.

Coincidence 1999 France French 52 min Eclipse chasers from all walks of life speak about their passion.  A solar eclipse is one of the few cosmic events visible with the unaided eye.  It is an extraordinary and unforgettable spectacle for those who witness it.  But have the sensations that it etches on the mind evolved over the centuries ?  From the first eclipses observed by humans to the understanding of celestial mechanics, from the terrifying oracles to the trivialization of the phenomenon, what is left today of the emotions of our ancestors ?  COINCIDENCE examines the evolution of humankind's reaction to this cosmic event through the accounts of eclipse chasers, scientists and amateurs alike.  What common ground is there between a NASA astrophysicist, a nurse and an astrologist ?  Between a shamanistic expert and a elementary particles physicist ?  All have observed a number of eclipses and despite their differences, their points of view are not contradictory.  Some of them traveled thousand of kilometres to observe an annular eclipse in Australia on February 16, 1999.  Annularity lasted all of 43 seconds !   The beauty and mystery of eclipses is in part due to the fact that they are entirely beyond our will and that they bring together individuals and people whose paths would otherwise never cross.
Countdown to the Eclipse 1999 UK English   With Patrick Moore. (Raoul Lannoy)
Eclipse - Herald of the Millennium 1999 UK English 52 min This video documents the 1999 total solar eclipse.  Some of the contributions are colourful - footage of New Agers, Pagans, Travelers and Druids and their rituals make it into the video along with a discussion of Nostradamus and an experiment to see if eggs can be made to stand during an eclipse.  We see narrator, Brian Blessed, dramatically appear quoting Gloucester in King Lear on a coastal amphitheatre.  Children in Hungary join hands to form a line along the track of totality. We are shown a Romanian couple who will marry during totality. Another couple cycle along the track of totality looking for the best spot.  Dracula's castle in Transylvania lies just outside the track of totality - the effect the eclipse might have on him is considered.  The mayors of the neighbouring towns of Blagny and Carignan try and push their town's claims to being the best spot to observe the eclipse. They advance their own town's claims, while disparaging the other.  Mixed in with this, we see more sober contributions from astronomers and scientists like Hubert Reeves,  John Mason, Jay Pasachoff, Fred Espenak (captioned as 'Head of Eclipses, NASA'), Rainer Schwenn and Jean Pierre Sareyan.  Computer animations are used to illustrate why we get eclipses on the Earth, and why Mercury and Venus don't get any at all. Also the inclination of the Moon's orbit is illustrated and explained as the cause why we don't get eclipses every new moon.   Eye safety is touched upon, even though the eclipse is over. The French Government, we are told, made efforts to distribute 35million viewers. An unfortunate Romanian fisherman is shown - he lost an eye in the 1961 eclipse, when he used water droplets as a 'filter'.  Sadly, the droplets had the opposite effect as they focussed the light even more - now he will be more prudent.  The eclipse itself is clouded out in England.   Astrophotographer Martin Ratcliffe consoles himself that he was ready for it, but that the weather failed to cooperate. While the Germans save their eclipse viewers for Africans in 2001, we are told that the English burn theirs.  We are not shown any footage from David Levy's cruise ship or from the small vessels that we see set sail from Ireland to go into the  track of totality.  We do see nice footage of totality taken at Szombathely.  In Reims, amateur footage shows a very excitable crowd. At a festival near Salzburg we see shots of the totally eclipsed Sun while an 8-metre headless giant effigy is set alight by Spanish performers for a double-climax.  We also see dramatic ultra-close-up views of the eclipsed Sun showing the prominences and chromosphere.  Results from the egg experiment are described as 'inconclusive'!  (Micheal Gill)

ESA Science Eclipse 99 / Pleins Feux Soleil Noir 1999 European Community English / French 29 min This video documents the science and public outreach activities by ESA on August 11th 1999. Using computer generated animations an explanation is given about how eclipses occur. Important contributions to science made during eclipses are discussed including the gravitational bending of light predicted by Einstein, the discovery of helium and the realization that the corona was at such high temperatures. Footage from various locations is used. An airborne expedition operating out of Ireland was successful.  Other places inside the track of totality where ESA had staff:- Noyon (cloudy) Thionville (success), Strasbourg (success), Stuttgart (cloudy), Munich (success), Burgenland (success), Szambathely (success), Bucharest (success) and Bulgaria (success).Luminaries like Dr. Detlef Koschney (ESA Space Science Dept.) and Dr. Ken Phillips (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory) make contributions.  The video concludes with a discussion on ESA space missions like Ulysses, SOHO and Cluster.  (Michael Gill)

SONG OF THE SUN: how scientists have been able to study the ways in which the Sun works, including recording the sound it makes.
The Eclipse Phenomenon 1999 UK English 50 min A video preview of the 1999 European eclipse. Also see Eclipse 99.

The video's opening sequence is shot at Stonehenge - believed by some to have been possibly used to record/predict eclipses.  The video then gives a comprehensive overview on where to see totality from on August 11th 1999. We are shown astronomer David Levy on the deck of a ship - he and 700 other enthusiasts will be the first to see the 1999 total eclipse, close to where the Titanic foundered. The path across Europe is shown in some detail.  Black and white footage of astronomers preparing for the June 1927 total solar eclipse is shown - this was the last occasion the Moon's shadow crossed England.  Other previous eclipses are discussed: the 'Halley' eclipse of 1715, the 'Einstein' eclipse of 1919, Jules Janssen's dramatic balloon escape from Paris to get to Algeria to (unsuccessfully) observe the 1870 total eclipse, and the 'Concorde' eclipse of 1973.  Extensive use is made of computer animations in this video. The origin of the Earth-Moon system by an impact of a Mars-sized body on the proto-Earth is rendered. The increasing Earth-Moon distance together with the slowdown of the Earth's spin is shown. The importance of the lunar orbital nodes, the differences between annular and total eclipses and lunar phases are all explained. Animations of solar eclipses from other bodies in the solar system illustrate how lucky we are on Earth to have the Moon and Sun the same apparent size in our sky.  The dangers of solar observing are demonstrated dramatically by using an unfiltered telescope pointed at the Sun to ignite some tissue paper. Safe solar observing methods such as the pinhole method and projection method are shown. The video then thoroughly describes the birth of the solar system, sunspots, the 11-year solar cycle, coronal mass ejections, the solar wind and auroras. Extensive use is made of films made by instruments on the SOHO spacecraft.  Finally, the video goes on location to Curacao for the 1998 total solar eclipse. Scientists and eclipse chasers are shown preparing their equipment for the crucial three and a half minutes. Beautiful footage of that eclipse is included.  (Michael Gill)

The Magic of Total Solar Eclipses 1999 UK English 24 min Prepared prior to August 1999 to enable viewers to safely observe that total solar eclipse.  The film opens at Stonehenge and discusses the importance of the Sun to early cultures and the Sun's role in Earth's weather. The Sun's internal processes are outlined and the photosphere, chromosphere and corona are all described.  A demonstration is given by presenter Nik Kendrew on the proper use of solar eclipse filters.  The scale of the solar system and the inclination of the Moon's orbit to Earth's orbital plane is demonstrated and the cause of annular and of total solar eclipses are explained.  Dr. Francisco Diego then explains solar phenomena such as sunspots, the solar wind and the rotation of the Sun and using still photographs he illustrates how the appearance of the corona differs from one total eclipse to the next.  Dr. Diego follows this with a comprehensive description of the phenomena visible at a total solar eclipse and some beautiful footage of the Bolivian landscape taken by the University College London 1994 expedition is used.  In February 1998, presenter Kendrew then travels to Guadeloupe with the UCL expedition for his first total solar eclipse. Beautiful footage of the totally eclipsed Sun and the surrounding landscape during totality are shown.  (Michael Gill)
The Story of the Total Solar Eclipse 11th August 1999 1999 UK English 50 min This video was produced following the total solar eclipse of 11th August 1999 - the first in England since 1927.  Unfortunately, mostly cloudy conditions prevailed along the track of totality for this eclipse in the UK. This resulted in the footage of the total solar eclipse in this video being provided by an RAF Hercules aircraft above the clouds. Images of the landscape during totality below the clouds are shown.  This is complemented by some footage taken elsewhere in Europe where clouds didn't spoil the show.   The main location used in this video is Bray Hill, in Daymer Bay, Cornwall .  Presenter Patrick Moore provides background information about distances in space, the composition of the Sun and its evolution. He explains (with the help of animations) the causes of lunar phases as well as the different types of eclipses: lunar, partial solar, total and annular.  A couple of locals are then interviewed - they appear disgruntled at the disruption to their lives caused by the eclipse and show little interest in the spectacle.  Despite their cynicism, some 2,500 people climb Bray Hill and we are shown some of them setting up their equipment - under heavy cloud cover.  Footage of the 1998 University College London expedition is shown together with still photographs taken by Dr. Francisco Diego to illustrate the differing appearance of the solar corona at different totalities.  To put this into historical context, fascinating footage is shown of previous eclipses. We see film taken of British expeditions preparing for the 1927 total solar eclipse (silent), as well as excerpts from newsreel footage of the July 31, 1932 total eclipse (sound) visible from North America.  Footage of the 1947 total solar eclipse taken in Brazil is incorrectly dated 1937. Other eclipses shown are 1954, 1961, 1963, 1968 embellished with personal recollections and anecdotes by Moore.  After mentioning the eclipse superstitions in some parts of the world, we see footage of the 1999 event taken at Bray Hill, Marazion Beach and Falmouth (all clouded out). On Bray Hill, the post eclipse reactions of a few people is shown.  Although it contained some errors (Brazilian 1947 eclipse incorrectly dated; the discussion of an eclipse comet in 1947 - should be 1948; incorrect duration for the Concorde totality in 1973) the video provided an interesting record of how the passage of the lunar umbra was observed in Cornwall.   (Michael Gill)
